The best hospital bag checklist- What you actually need to pack in your hospital bag for labor
Deciding what things to pack in a hospital bag for labor and delivery can be overwhelming, but don’t fret, mama; I am here to help you pack your hospital bag in the most minimalist way.
As I prepare my hospital bag for the third time, I can assure you that they are things that are essential for your hospital bag and will most definitely need. But some items will just be taking up space in your bag, and believe me you don’t need that kind of extra clutter or stress in your life.
If everything goes according to plan, the most you spend in a hospital post labor and delivery is three days.
And although the hospital provides everything you need to get through labor and delivery, the items they provide are not known to be the most comfortable. After going through the most uncomfortable procedure of giving birth to a baby, whether vaginally or via c-section, you want to be as comfortable as possible afterward. That’s why it’s essential to bring a few of your own items when it’s time to head to the birth center.

When to pack hospital bag
It’s a good idea to start packing your hospital bag by the beginning of the third trimester (28 weeks), so you can purchase anything you don’t already have. I say this because I am writing this article at 36 weeks, 5 days pregnant, and waddling like a penguin and can’t be out for more than an hour because the baby is dancing on my bladder. So definitely purchase the items you will need for your hospital bag at the beginning of the third trimester.
I would also like to stress that you are not being treated at the hospital for free. The very expensive health insurance plan you are paying for on a weekly or bi-weekly basis is what’s covering your stay at the hospital.
On that note, you will most likely be supplied with diapers, wipes, nipple cream, mesh underwear, etc., while at the hospital. As someone who has worked in hospitals for many years while in college, know that they will not reuse the supplies in the room you stayed in once you are discharged. They will dispose of everything.
So, take full advantage of what they’re providing you with and take what’s left home with you. Also, ask for additional supplies for baby and postpartum care to take home. You will meet some kind nurses who will happily give you whatever extra items you need to take home to care for yourself and your baby.

Even if you decide not to use shampoo and conditioner, those items are important to have in your hospital bag if you don’t feel like smelling like the hospital’s basic shampoo and conditioner.

As I have already mentioned, hospitals are ready to supply you with whatever you need to care for your baby and postpartum care. Before leaving the hospital, stock up on diapers, wipes, bathing essentials, and other items you need to care for your baby.
Don’t forget to also stock up on mesh underwear, tucks pads, maxi pads, peri bottles, and other necessities to care for yourself at home.
Note: You honestly do not need a hair dryer or straightener. You are beautiful just the way you are if you want to preserve your energy. However, if you feel like going the extra mile to pamper yourself after completing the most incredible and courageous task on earth, feel free to pack those two items in your hospital bag.
Pro mama tip: The blankets in the hospital are super rough and not comfortable in any way, if you have space in your bag even for a small throw blanket, I’d pack one.
